Getting there: UK and Ireland ferry ports

The following is a brief guide to UK and Irish ports used by passenger ferry companies.

Port of Aberdeen

WHERE IT IS: In north-east Scotland in Aberdeen city centre, off the A90.

GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Jamieson's Quay, the departure point for passenger ferries, is a short taxi ride or a 10-minute walk from Aberdeen train station in the city centre.

PARKING: Short and long stay car parking is available opposite the port entrance.

OTHER INFORMATION: Northlink Ferries operates from the port.

Port of Belfast

WHERE IT IS: Off the M2 motorway at the head of Belfast Lough, on the north-east coast of Northern Ireland.

GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The nearest railway station is Belfast Central, about 10 minutes walk from the port.

Buses into Belfast city centre stop at Donegal Quay and Glengall Street, which are two minutes and 20 minutes walk from the port respectively.

PARKING: The port has limited car parking.

OTHER INFORMATION: Stena Line and Seacat operate regular passenger services from the port.

Port of Cairnryan

WHERE IT IS: About eight miles south of the Port of Stranraer, on the south-west coast of Scotland, off the A77.

TELEPHONE: 0870 2424 777 (P&O Irish Sea)

GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The port's nearest mainline train station is in Stranraer. Regular connections to Stranraer leave from Glasgow Central station.

Buses to the port leave from Port Rodie, opposite the police station in Stranraer. However, the service is infrequent and it is best to take a taxi to the port.

PARKING: Free short and long stay car parking.

OTHER INFORMATION: No left-luggage service. P&O Irish Sea is the only passenger ferry operator at the port.

Port of Dover

WHERE IT IS: On the Strait of Dover in the south-east of England, off the M2 or M20.

GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The port's nearest train station is Dover Priory, in the town centre. Courtesy coaches operated by ferry companies run daily between 6am and 10pm from Dover Priory station to the port.

PARKING: Long stay car parking

OTHER INFORMATION: The port is divided into two docks - Eastern and Western. Ferries depart from the Eastern Docks, while the Western Docks are used solely as the cruise terminal. Ferry companies P&O Ferries, SeaFrance, Hoverspeed and Norfolkline operate from the port.

Port of Dublin

WHERE IT IS: On the east coast of southern Ireland, about 3km from Dublin city centre.

GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Dublin train station is in the city centre. From there, the port is a short taxi ride away. Buses to the port are available according to ferry sailing times. Pick-up arrangements are made once a ferry ticket is booked.

PARKING: Short and long stay car parking.

OTHER INFORMATION: Irish Ferries, Merchant Ferries, Stena Line, P&O European Ferries and the Isle of Man Steampacket Company, all operate passenger services from Dublin.
