Safety: Safety for women
It's a sad fact, but women are more likely to be harassed or threatened than men, wherever they are. On holiday, try to be extra vigilant and sensible about personal safety, even if you're with a group of friends.
BEFORE YOU GO
WHAT TO PACK
Unless you're staying solely in a resort, think carefully about your clothing. Pack items appropriate for your destination. In parts of the Middle East, Africa and India, for example, women are usually expected to cover up.
- Consider wearing a wedding ring even if you're single, to deter unwanted admirers
- Take a money belt and bum-bag for cash
- Pack a sarong that can double as a skirt, shawl or headscarf in hot countries
- Carry a rape alarm if you're travelling alone
- Use a bag that can zip and lock as hand luggage or a daypack
ON HOLIDAY
SELF-DEFENCE
Try to avoid unwanted attention, by blending in. Appear confident rather than vulnerable and let friends or the hotel receptionist know when you expect to be back if you go walkabout.
- Stick to busy areas after dark
- Avoid one-to-one confrontations
- Avoid making eye contact if you don't want to be noticed
- Carry ID
- Don't wear too much jewellery
- Leave valuables, your passport and extra cash in your hotel safe
- Be careful about wearing skimpy clothes at night if you're alone
LISTEN TO THE LOCALS
Get local advice on safe places to visit and social customs. Find out what the protocol is for women and pitch your expectations accordingly. A pinch on the bottom may be considered a friendly gesture in some countries.
- Never be afraid to speak out if someone is persistently harassing you
- Be careful about how you react to compliments
- If a stranger touches you or makes unwanted advances, alert passers-by.
