Safety: Safety for children
Protecting children from injury or getting lost is a real challenge for families on holiday, particularly when there are so many distractions. What children eat, the animals they come into contact with and kids' hygiene habits need to be closely monitored.
Don't wander off
Stick a label inside a child's clothing detailing where you're staying and a contact number, in case they get lost. Explain to them why it is there. Older children should be able to recite the information.
- Carry a photo of your children to use as ID in case they get lost
- If a child has a medical condition, think about getting them a Medic Alert bracelet
- Never leave a child unsupervised while swimming
- If a teenager wants to socialise with peers, agree on times when they should report back
Health and hygiene
- Peel, boil or wash food if you're unsure about whether it's safe
- Make children wash their hands before eating
- Be extra careful with seafood and meat
- Don't let a child eat anything that has been left uncovered for too long in the sun
- Drink only bottled water, and be wary of ice made from tap water
Bites and stings
Like adults, children need any jabs and anti-malarials necessary for a destination. In malarial areas, coat them regularly with insect repellent or a high SPF sun cream containing repellent.
Be wary about letting children touch stray animals and pets. Bites can cause tetanus or rabies in certain countries. If they are bitten, wash the bite with soap, alcohol and water, then seek medical help.
