Getting there: Driving abroad

Road rules and regulations differ greatly from country to country, and just driving on the opposite side of the road can be disorientating. Prepare for differences by being informed. If you're taking your own car abroad, remember to let your insurance company know in advance.

In Europe

Driving on the right in a standard right-hand-drive car can be tricky for first-timers. Using a left-hand-drive car, on the other hand, seems more natural when using the opposite side of the road.

Be particularly careful about oncoming traffic at roundabouts and junctions
Keep "thinking left" at all times
Keep change handy for toll booths, if necessary, to prevent distractions from driving
Carry an E111 form for medical treatment in case of accident

Whatever you drive, it's compulsory to equip your car with certain items in European countries. You'll always need:

A GB nationality plate or sticker for the back of the car
Beam benders - to adjust car headlights for driving on the other side of the road
Spare car light bulbs
A first aid kit and small fire extinguisher for the car
A UK driving licence or International Driving Permit - needed in some countries
Vehicle registration documents or a hire certificate if using a rental car
A warning triangle, stored in the car boot

The rest of the world

Driving laws and etiquette differ from country to country, so motorists need to stay alert at all times behind the wheel. In the US, for example, there is a "four way stop" system at some junctions, rather than traffic lights. Always remember:

That it's illegal to drive with alcohol in the car in the US, except in the boot
To get adequate medical and travel insurance for the US
Petrol may be sold by the gallon, rather than litre
Petrol stations may be pay first, self-service or full service - look for signs
Keep change handy for toll booths, if necessary
Traffic light sequences and road markings may differ abroad, so keep eyes peeled
