Fear of Flying
Health: Fear of flying
Some people fear flying because they don’t know enough about it, others are scared to fly after an unpleasant experience on a plane and some are put off by negative stories. If you're a first-time flyer, it's normal to feel apprehensive before and during a flight.
BEFORE TAKE-OFF
In most cases, a fear of flying can be beaten. Try to tackle it. The more it takes root, the harder it will be to overcome.
Self-help techniques
• Visit airports to see how planes take off and land
• Read books on the mechanics of flying
• Talk to regular flyers
• Try to become familiar with an aircraft's sounds and idiosyncrasies
• Rehearse by visualising all the steps you must take to go on a flight
Professional treatments
Flying phobics can feel weepy at the very thought of being on a plane. Those who manage to board an aircraft may hyperventilate, sweat, and experience palpitations and temporary paralysis. Various treatments are commonly offered by experts.
• Hypnotherapy - used to combat psychological or physical conditions
• Counselling - a GP should be able to recommend a fear of flying expert
• Specialised courses - these typically involve group sessions and possibly a flight
IN THE AIR
Even mild fear can make flying pretty unpleasant, but there are ways to manage anxiety while in the air. First, make your journey as comfortable as possible, and then employ a few relaxation techniques.
• On takeoff, close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply to calm nerves
• Try using lavender essential oil to help tackle panic, hysteria and nervous anxiety
• Listen to soothing music
• During the flight, try watching the in-flight movie - it may distract you from your fears
• Use chamomile, champaca or petitgrain essential oils to ease stress and aid sleep
