Avoriaz makes up one of the 14 resorts of ‘Portes du Soleil,’ occupying the central position meaning the border from France to Switzerland is only a short ski away, while also boasting 650km of slopes, the largest in Europe – there is plenty to explore! Avoriaz is great for all levels of skier offering a variety of trails, there are also three snow parks and a snow cross zone to practice some free style moves. There is good après ski at this resort with live music and bars to entertain locals and tourists.
Of the purpose-built resorts thrown up in the 1960s, Avoriaz is one of the better designed – genuinely convenient in most respects, completely car-free and visually striking rather than offensive. If there were a fleet of flunkies on hand to shift your bags to your apartment while you downed a welcome glass of fizz, it would be the perfect base for skiing the Portes du Soleil. Well, if the apartment you were heading for were a bit smarter, too.
