Getting There and around Crete
There are frequent flights to Crete to and from the main airport at Heraklion, or the smaller one at Chania, especially during summer months. Flying from all the main UK airports.
Once you're there, your tour operator may include airport transfers as part of your package, however you must check with your individual specific resort to see if this is included in your all-inclusive deal. Alternatively you can take a taxi from the airport to your resort but make sure to agree a fare with the driver first.
Once at the destination you could use the local public transport to travel around. If this does not suite you cars and mopeds are easy to hire, but be warned mopeds have caused many accidents in Greece.
Beaches in Crete
If you’re looking for sun, sea and sand then you have chosen the perfect destination. There are numerous beaches in Crete and although most are packed in peak summer months, there are many hidden ones that take a little bit of searching. So why not head off the beaten track in search of your personal paradise. For information on the more discrete beaches ask the reception at your all-inclusive resort.
Some of the best beaches in Heraklion are to be found around Hersonissos; it is well organised, very family friendly, clean and has a water sports center that is sure to fulfill your entertainment needs for a day on the beach. Rethymno appears to be the most popular beach destination in Crete and it is obvious why.
The beaches here are all known for their calm environment and crystal clear waters. To the South you have the more secluded and quieter beaches perfect for relaxing where as the beaches to the North are the most popular and therefore experience a large amount of tourists in the summer months. Bali beach in Rethymno is definitely worth a visit, its wild landscape and sandy stretch of beach is sure to have you impressed.
Sightseeing in Crete
Knossos there is an ancient Minoan palace that was painstakingly uncovered and reconstructed over many years by archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans which is most certainly worth a visit. There are plenty of colourful frescos, pillars and sophisticated plumbing to explore. Other Minoan sites include Phaistos and Gortys. The Ida is the highest mountain on Crete: 2456 metres, so for the photographers among you it is a must see. For the adventurers why not try climbing to the peak!
At the archaeological museum in Heraklion the capital of Crete you can admire a lot of antiques from Malia, Knossos, Zakros en Festos. Crete has so many different wonders to be discovered and you are likely to find some in any destination you visit on this beautiful island. Eating and Nightlife in Crete
Your all-inclusive resort is bound to give you a wide range of foods to enjoy. The buffets that are on offer at most all-inclusive resorts offer a huge range of cuisine, from local dishes such as mezedes (like tapas) to full English breakfast sure to set you up for a long day in the sun on the beach. At Crete has rich fertile soils producing delicious fruit and vegetables, which together with a range of tasty cheeses and honey make up the staple traditional diet.
The best nightlife resorts are Malia and Hersonissos, here you will find bars all along the seafront and main streets, the bars start to get fairly busy around 11 o’clock in the summer months. These bars blast out loud music for the whole street to hear and are open till the early hours of the morning. These two resorts are the perfect place to visit if you wish to stumble out of the bar in the early morning sun along with many other like minded revelers.
Crete Shopping and Family Attractions
When you fancy a day away from your all-inclusive resort there is still plenty to be done, especially shopping. Chania has a great selection of shops overflowing with souvenirs and must-buy jewellery. There are numerous chic harbour front boutiques in Aghios Nikolaos, while in the roads further back you'll find jewellery stores and traditional handicrafts.
If quality shopping isn’t enough there are whole days out for the family to be had. Crete boasts two water parks where you can let the kids loose on a variety of rides, slides and fake waves. The first, Aquaplus, is just outside Hersonissos and spreads over 57 acres and includes giant slides, a lazy river, space bowl, a giant adventure pool and special area for smaller children. The other, Limnoupolis, is eight kilometres from Chania and also has a lazy river, slides and relaxing, shady areas.
Kids might enjoy the Diktean Cave, near Psychro, which has a collection of different-sized caves some with stalactites and stalagmites decorating the floor and ceiling.
