Getting There and around Costa del Sol
Getting to the Costa del Sol has never been easier due to the sheer number of airlines serving the major cities of Seville, Granada, Malaga, Gibraltar and Almeria. Once there it is likely that your all-inclusive offer covers transfers to and from the airport, however check with your specific resort for confirmation.
If this is not the case you have plenty of other options for getting about. There are car hire options at all the airports and the region's bus service is efficient. There's also a train service which runs from Malaga to Fuengirola and with stops at Malaga airport and Torremolinos.
Beaches in Costa del Sol
If your chosen all-inclusive resort is waterfront then you are likely to have a beautiful beach on your doorstep, if not fear not as there are many others on offer. 13 of the beaches in the Costa del Sol have been awarded the prestigious Blue. Most of the beaches in this gorgeous destination offer a wide variety of water sports which are sure to entertain the whole family, sun loungers are also readily available for those who wish to sit back and relax in the warm sun.
To the western end of the Costa del Sol, around 30 miles from Malaga, you will find the resort of Nerja which offers more subtle beaches with fewer tourists. The lookout point at Nerja offers some stunning views of the sea and the surrounding beaches and coastline.
Sightseeing in Costa del Sol
The fifth largest city in Spain is situated virtually in the centre of the Costa del Sol, Malaga. With such a diverse history the city has come to contain a large amount of interesting features. This includes a stunning cathedral, the Alcazaba which was built in the 11th century, some beautiful gardens and a fair amount of museums and galleries.
When you need a break from the beaches, there's plenty to see and do on the Costa del Sol. Marbella's old town (casco antiguo) dates from the 16th century, and it's a lovely place to stroll and has some good markets on Mondays.
Eating and Nightlife in Costa del Sol
Your all-inclusive resort is guaranteed to have a wide range of delicious cuisine on offer, with many of the all-inclusive resorts offering buffet meals, full English breakfasts, fast food and traditional food of the local area.
If you want to try the traditional Spanish cuisine, you're in the ideal place, as Andalucia is the birthplace of tapas. Take your time and enjoy several dishes over the course of a few hours. Try gambas al ajillo, prawns in hot garlic oil, and patatas bravas, potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce.
If you are looking for some more familiar foods then not to worry, in many resorts you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants serving traditional English fare (fish and chips, fry-up etc) and a few sports bars where you can enjoy a pint and watch some football.
If you were looking for nightlife on your holiday then you have certainly struck gold. The Spanish certainly do know how to party! There's no shortage of buzzing nightlife on the Costa del Sol. Torremolinos and Benalmadena, are the places to go if you want heavy beats, cheap beers and lots of ravers. If you’re looking for glitz and glamour then head to Marbella or Puerto Banus which have become home to some of Europe’s most exclusive nightclubs and bars. This obviously comes at some cost to your wallet.
For a cheaper and more cultural night out, try and catch a flamenco show in the evening. Ana Maria's, in Marbella's Old Town is a good place to see a performance of this passionate dance.
Costa del Sol Shopping and Family Attractions
If your all-inclusive resort hasn’t completely filled your day time needs then there is still plenty to be done in the brilliant holiday destination. For the shoppers amongst you there are weekly flea markets held in most resorts, ask the reception at your all-inclusive resort for details on the closest one. Head for Fuengirola on a Tuesday and the bullring near yacht-lovers' haven Puerto Banus on a Saturday. At both you'll find some ethnic Moroccan items, Spanish antiques and good-quality local crafts.
If you’re looking for designer labels that commonly originate from Spain then Puerto Banus is the place to be. However if you just have souvenirs in mind then there are hundreds of shops in all the resorts that scatter the waterfront selling all kinds Costa del Sol reminders.
The Costa del Sol is also scattered with great golf resorts from the very exquisite ones to the ones anyone can attend. So if you fancy a good game of golf in the Spanish sun then why not ask reception at your all-inclusive resort for the closest one.
If the family gets bored of shopping or fun and sun on the beach, there's loads of other ways to spend a few hours. Benalmadena has Tivoli World, an amusement park with rides for all ages and flamenco dancing performances. It's also home to the Sea Life aquarium where you can watch under water creatures from all over the world.
