Your Guide to Last Minute Holidays in The Balearic Islands

Getting There and around The Balearic Islands

If you are looking for late deals, the Balearic Islands are great places for a last minute holiday. Getting there is easy as there are frequent daily flights from all major UK airports to all the islands. Last minute flights are also available with most of the major airlines.

Travelling whilst on the Balearic Islands is usually pretty easy. However renting a car is very much recommended in order to get to the best places all over the islands. Renting a car at last minute is also possible with booking on arrival at the airports.

Beaches in The Balearics

The island of Menorca has a large number of fantastic beaches including the Cala de Algaiarens being the pick of the Calas or coves dotted all around the island. Quite a lot of them though are only accessible via the sea and their position only given away by the yachts and small craft anchored slightly offshore around them. Formentera also offers some beautiful beaches and coves with crystal clear water and powdery sand there is nothing better than booking a late deal holiday and ending up a few days later on one of these beaches relaxing with your toes buried in the sand.

If your late minute trip takes you to Majorca make sure your visit includes Cala Bona on the east coast and, further down, the resorts of Cala Gran, Cala Esmerelda and Cala Ferrera collectively known as Cala d'Or. Ibiza's fairly similar, with many beaches backed by concrete monstrosities, but it's easy to head off the beaten track and find some isolated gems.

Remember there are always hidden beaches and coves ready for you to explore you just need to go on a little hunting expedition or ask locals or the staff at your last minute resort.

Sightseeing in The Balearic Islands

If your last minute holiday takes you to Majorca then there is plenty to see. A drive along the coast will take you to the port of Soller, a brilliant place to spend an evening watching the sun set, with many old Spanish homes in the center of the town. Soller is also close to some beautiful small villages such as Fornalutx which offers you a real insight into the Spanish way of life with its small village square and twisting back alleys. Also a perfect place to begin your trekking quest up the many mountains surrounding the area. It is a must!

Cami de Cavalls only recently reopened properly, the Cami de Cavalls ('path of horses') which weaves its way around the whole island giving you a stunning view of Menorca’s beautiful coastline and picturesque countryside. You can walk the trail that has been around since the 14th century or travel by horse. A perfect way to escape the main hubs of the island and relax on your last minute booking.

Art lovers visiting Ibiza should take a bit of time away from the beach to visit the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, near D'Alt Vila, an old walled town with an arched gateway. There are regularly changing modern art exhibitions and it's a nice place to spend a few hours.

Eating and Nightlife in The Balearics

You won’t be short on luxury food in your last minute holiday in the Balearic Islands. All over the islands you'll find excellent cuisine and the seafood's particularly good. Palma has lots of good restaurants serving Spanish and European food and Ciutudella's harbour, in Menorca, is a lovely place to dine on some of the most wonderful seafood you’re ever likely to taste.
However, a trip to the Balearic islands cannot be done without the tasting of their traditional Tapas. Tapas are a variety of small dishes giving you a wide range of Spanish foods to try from Patatas Bravas to Paella.

Food aside, the night life in the Balearics is something definitely worth mentioning. Ibiza as a whole has an exceptional night life. With late deals from Teletext holidays you could be dancing the night and morning away in no time at all! The huge nightlife brings in some of the most exceptional DJ’s the world has to offer; the venues match the quality of music. Pure class. This does however mean there is a slight cost to the experience but it is well worth it.

There's a good variety of bars and clubs in the big Majorcan resorts, like Magaluf and Palma Nova which attract brash partygoers, to quiet al fresco nights in local village bars. Ciutudella in Menorca has some very chic cocktail bars and a couple of live music venues, which turn into hip clubs later in the night.

Shopping and Family Attractions

All of the Balearic Islands offer good shopping experiences, not necessarily what we might be used to. Most villages have markets selling all kinds of goods. The islands are especially well known for their ceramics and tourists often bring back hand made pots and plates.

Palma, the capital of Majorca and the only major city in the Balearics is definitely the best place for shopping, its long rows of shops and café’s leave you spoilt for choice, with every other shop displaying the fantastic clothes of Spanish designers.

The hot weather has also meant that many water parks have popped up all over the islands, with late deals taking you to some of the best resorts details of these are all provided by staff. Aquacity in Arenal, Majorca, Europe's largest park, which has numerous slides like the Black Hole and Kamikaze is a must visit if your late deal takes you to Majorca.
